NameDateReason for defection
Gabrielle Nagle03 February 2019Non belief from a very early age (about 9) and now my utter disgust with the sick sex scandals that have been ongoing for centuries has spurred me on to defect from this sickening, corrupt, holier than thou establishment.
Carl-Eoin Nash10 August 2015As I'm gay I"m seen as unnatural and have been told by a school priest since 4th class to 6th year
Eileen Nash30 June 2021I will not stand by an institution that directly caused the deaths of thousands of First Nations children.
Jana Naughton25 May 2019Growing up in Ireland I was always made to feel a monster for ever questioning Catholic ethics. It was only by travelling to explore other cultures, researching other religions and reading a range of philosophies that you do not need the medium of religion to guide the life you live. Since this awakening, I have found paths and beliefs that resonate with me far more than my doubtful experiences of Catholic teachings in which I was forced to trust by a frightened and conservative Ireland. Now I can say I will not listen to a church that uses its power over its people in the worst possible ways and has done so for decades - I don't want my name to be any part of it.
Leo Naughton08 December 2019Never truly believed. I also strongly disagree with many ideals of the Catholic Church
Odhran Naughton03 March 2017I have been an agnositc/Atheist since I was 18 years old. I am now 26 and no longer want to be affiliated with the church in anyway.

Alva Nic Gabhann24 August 2018I can’t stand to be a part of an institution that protects corrupt men. I can’t be a part of a group that attempt to suppress my rights in the 21st century, I cannot be a part of a corrupt church, who has hurt so many people.
Sandra Nicholson27 February 2019I don’t believe that created stories and teaching based on fear is ok to get people to be good. I don’t like the organization that is the Catholic Church, it’s structures, it’s teachings.

Joanna Nolan27 August 2018I would not want to be associated with the horror that is the Catholic Church. I wish to defect for the beatings my parents amd grandparents were given by the priests and the nuns. For the victims of abuse over decades. For the people who believe but are turned away because of their sexuality. For the women of the Magadelene Laundries, treated like they were nothing. For those poor nameless babies in Tuam. For every disgusting stain on Irish History caused by the Catholic Church.

Daniel Norman18 June 2019I no longer see enough evidence to believe in any god, let alone Yahweh of the Christian Bible. Roy O Brien22 September 2017I'm areligious, whilst I see a lot of comfort and solace for people especially in desperate times it's just not for me, plus I dislike when religious people pompously say I'll "regret it when blah, blah, blah" after I've been nothing but polite to them. Best of luck to the religious people whatever they like to fantasise about, it's just not for me.
Sinead O brien23 November 2019I want no pay off a church that systematically and regularly tries to cover up abuse. The Catholic Church treatment of women is less than we deserve. As an organisation they need to be held to account for their crimes against humanity. Their greed and unwillingness to change. Even the fact that they turn a blind eye to 'defectors' requests to be discounted. The Catholic Church needs to grow up, move with the times and accept they are no longer the power house they once were. I will not be considered a part of this organisation.
Shannon-Louise O Carroll20 November 2023No belief in the religion
Cian O Ciobhain10 August 2015I hope the Catholic Church respect my decision that as a mature adult I would never have signed up to this club in the first place. Georgina O`Mahony30 May 2018Atheist for 25 years. Never believed but I was in a catholic school, run by nuns so there was no other choice. I have never considered myself catholic and do not want to be affiliated with the catholic church in any way. The sexual abuse, the mistreatment of communities and members, the blatant abuse of power, responsibility for the death of so many children, the vicious and vile verbal attacks against the same sex marriage referendum and now the same filthy, repugnant and truly horrifying things that they are saying now that the abortion referendum has passed. I am truly disgusted by all actions that the catholic church have taken in the past and all the actions they are currently taking. Their behaviour is beyond abhorrent.
Fergal O' Gara06 March 2017Eh one, of many, reason would be my absolute disgust at consistent abhorrent abuse of women and children by the catholic church. Not my church, not my religion, not in my name!
Aisling O' Keeffe10 August 2015I never chose to join the Catholic faith and I don't believe in any aspect of it.
James O' Neill29 February 2016I reject Christian or any other religious beliefs and the concepts of a deity or an afterlife and consider my membership of the Catholic church against my wishes as unjust and totally unacceptable.

Darren O'Brien27 January 2016I'm tired of hearing about unbaptised children having difficulty getting admitted to schools. I don't want my kids to be baptised, and I think the more people that defect and show their opposition to the church, the harder it will be for them to justify their hold on our schools
Emer O'Brien21 October 2017Atheist
Emma O'Brien11 April 2018I was never given a choice in this. As my parents have become increasingly involved in the church over the last few years (my father is now a deacon), I have become increasingly aware of the hypocrisy and bigotry of the church; it goes far beyond the usual objections. It infuritates me that supporting my parents means an occasional trip to mass, it infuriates that I'm counted as a member of such an immoral organisation, and it infuriates me that I have to watch my younger sister be indoctrinated. The Church leeching onto people who want to leave to boost their numbers is one more example of how they're not much better than any other cult. The power the church still has in Ireland is truly frightening, and it sickens me that my parents refuse to examine the destructive aspects of the belief system they prop up, when in every other way they are the best people I know. Mostly, I'm ashamed of myself for not putting my real name to this, the only excuse I have is the hurt it would cause my parents to read it, and the embarrassment it would cause them if someone they knew did. I'm sick of being complicit in propagating the church's bullshit, and I don't know how to balance that with my love for my family. I'm tired.
Gary O'Brien05 March 2017I was never a Catholic by choice, it was forced upon me by my parents. I was never a Catholic and after all the disgusting things the Catholic Church has done I don't know how anyone else is either.
Karyn O'Brien07 April 2019I don't believe any of the stories the church teaches. I don't believe the world was made in 7 days. I don't believe in Adam and Eve, Moses parting the sea, Noah's ark or any other stories. I don't believe women are second class citizens. I don't agree with the horrific treatment of women and children that happened in the Magdelene laundries. I don't believe Paedophiles should be continuously protected. I definietly do not think the church who have continously allowed these things to happen and have done nothing to address it, have any right to talk to people about morality. I am a good, kind, loving, empathetic person. I teach my son to be the same.
Kate O'Brien04 October 2016MANY!
Kelly O'Brien20 February 2019I do not recognise the catholic beliefs in any shape or form.
Pearse O'Brien16 August 2015Religion is a tool of fear and control used to turn people against each other for profit. Its a business. With a CEO, managers and staff. Dónal O'Flynn10 August 2015From the time I was old enough to understand it I have never believed in any aspect of the Catholic faith. I would rather not have been baptised, made first confession, communion and confirmation. Confession I take particular issue with. What "sins" does a nine year old have to confess? If I get married I will have a humanist ceremony and when I die I will have left instructions for a humanist funeral followed by cremation. Apart from musical performances, for which churches are often a great venue, I only darken their doors for weddings and funerals. These are important occasions and if the people involved wish them to take place in a religious setting I am more than happy to attend out of respect for my friends and loved ones. The discontinuation of the "Declaration of Defection" process is an affront to the right of freedom of religion and I deplore those who made the decision.
Brian O'Gorman16 August 2015I'm an atheist
Stacy O'Gorman29 May 2018It wasn't my choice to become a Catholic. It shouldn't be allowed to enter someone into something as an infant and then not let them have any option to leave it as an adult. I've wanted to leave the church for years.

David O'Leary21 August 2018I no longer have any personal connection or belief in anything relating to the Catholic Church or any such organised religious body. Am unhappy at the difficulty of officially defecting from the Catholic Church. While respecting those of faith, whatever their belief or creed, I no longer wish to be associated or counted in any way as a member of the Catholic Church.
Emma O'Leary18 September 2016I am not a practicing catholic and was baptised against my wishes as an infant. I no longer wish to be counted as a catholic in the records of the church.
Cian O'Mahony26 November 2017I have been atheist for almost 20 years now. It isn't even about not believing in a god anymore. Its more like why even bother with it. If I had grown up and not known about any religion and then when I was 16 someone came along and read me the bible or the Koran there is no way you would even entertain that kind of nonsense. Anyways, I don't want to be associated with Catholicism anymore and would really like to have my name removed from their registry.

Saoirse O'Regan10 May 2018i don't believe in the morals of this church and i wouldn't be able to live with myself if i supported an organisation that is so unbelievably bigoted towards women and the LGBTQ community

Janine O'Reilly29 May 2018I don't want to belong or be associated to a religion that dictates how we live our lives and our moral beliefs, when they think its acceptable for their leaders to abuse the vulnerable . I am a Christian and have my own good beliefs and would not act to harm another

I want no link with the Catholic Church whatsoever, and find it appalling that I can't leave something I never wanted, and still don't, want to be a part of. Frank OMoore31 October 2016I am a skeptic, no proof of God, no proof of no god! Organised religion simply prey on the fear of death and in the case of the catholic church, I cannot forgive the systematic abuses and related cover ups. The gas thing is they think they still offer moral leadership, ha.

Victoria Page09 July 2018I was made part of this cruel, unfair and archaic institution as a baby. I'm an atheist.
Megan Pál16 April 2019My beliefs do not coincide with beliefs of the Catholic faith. I also didn't choose to be Catholic but was baptised as a child as many children in Ireland are. If you want to be part of a religious faith then you should choose yourself at 18 years old and only then participate in religious events.

Carlos Parra15 January 2022I want to be a christian
Margaret Paterson18 May 2017Truama caused by Catholicism, does not believe anymore, and converting to another religion
Christina Patterson15 August 2018My mother had me baptised into this backwards institution when I was only 5 days old. I didn't have any say in the matter and had I, I wouldn't have become a member at all. I have never believed in God and I don't practice religion. That, up until some years ago, was enough for me to want to take my name off the CC records. However, after all of the horrific findings regarding the child sex abuse scandals, the unearthing of human remains in Tuam, the Magdalene laundries, the selling of babies and so much more – I want out. I do not want to have any association with a cult of paedophiles and murderers. The Catholic Church is a disgrace, those that run it are criminals walking around under the veil of "the untouchable men of God” hurting innocent boys and girls, knowing their buddies will always be there to cover their tracks. In any other walk of life, these crimes would have the perpetrators locked up with the key thrown away. Why should a man with a collar or a pointy hat be treated any differently?

Louise Phillips07 July 2018Not been an active member of the church for 19 years
Noz Pix05 August 2019I was 7 years old when I knew it was all nonsense. Being older and wiser, I can confirm the 7 year old me was correct. Women treated as second class; vunerable children abused. A long, long litany of hurt and pain caused by the very ones who held themselves up as pinnacles of virtue and decency.
June Plunkett16 August 2015I do not believe in God and have no respect or time for the Catholic church that I had no choice in being baptised into.
Sarah Pogue19 October 2015Since I was in my early teens, I have not believed in the existence of an all-powerful, supernatural being. Since this age, I have also been in very strong disagreement with many of the teachings of the Catholic Church, to the point that my continued membership of this organisation is in direct and frequent conflict with my own core set of beliefs, principles and morals.
